Alec Burnside practices in the field of EU and UK competition law, working on cartels, dominance, mergers, and state aid, as well as the control of foreign direct investment and EU law more generally. He appears before the European Commission and the UK’s Competition & Markets Authority, and in court appeals from their decisions; he is admitted to practice in both England and Belgium.

Based in Brussels for over three decades Mr. Burnside has played key roles for leading corporations, trade associations and governments on issues arising across a broad spectrum of industries. His work in the Big Data/Technology industry includes representation of numerous third parties in the European Commission’s investigations of Google’s abusive conduct; third parties in reviews of mergers involving data issues; and counselling on data issues in relation to the Internet of Things, digital medicine, manufacturing and transport services. He has also worked extensively on the nexus between antitrust and privacy.

Mr. Burnside has been widely published over many years, actively advancing law reform initiatives and exploring new dimensions in competition law. In addition to Big Data and the tech industry, he is particularly invested in the theme of antitrust and sustainability, as well as the new EU FDI regulation. Mr. Burnside leads Dechert’s cross-practice Brexit Task Force, comprising partners from across the globe and disciplines.
