Maria DuarteAssistant Director, Mergers at Competition & Markets Authority (CMA)
Maria Duarte is an Assistant Director in the Mergers Group at the CMA since 2016, with extensive experience in phase 1 and Phase 2 merger investigations.
Maria leads the CMA team that is proactively monitoring the EU merger portfolio and has had a key role in the CMA’s preparation for the end of the transition period, after the UK’s exit from the EU.
Previously, Maria worked as senior project officer in the Mergers Department of the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission and as legal adviser in the Portuguese Competition Authority.
Early in her career, Maria practiced competition law in top-tier law-firms in Portugal.
Maria is a qualified lawyer in the UK and in Portugal and holds an LLM from the College of Europe and a Postgraduate Diploma in “Economics for Competition Law” from King’s College.
