Maria Wasastjerna is a Partner at Hannes Snellman in Helsinki. She has extensive experience in competition law and regulatory matters and co-heads the firm’s Competition & Procurement practice. Maria advises Finnish and international companies on all aspects of competition law, specialising in regulatory legal and compliance matters, as well as in competition litigation and M&A transactions.
Prior to joining Hannes Snellman, Maria gained several years of experience as an in-house lawyer in global corporations. Most recently, she was lead counsel for global competition law and policy at Nokia Corporation, where she handled multinational merger control proceedings, compliance investigations and regulatory proceedings, including various patent licensing matters. Maria also has working experience from the EU and US competition regulators in Brussels and Washington, DC, and from Roschier Attorneys and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton.
Maria holds a PhD in commercial law from the University of Helsinki. She recently published a timely and well-received book on competition, data, and privacy in the digital economy with Wolters Kluwer. Maria also regularly publishes articles, presents at conferences, and lectures on competition, compliance and technology-related topics. She is a qualified attorney in Finland and the State of New York (US) and has been ranked in Legal 500 for her work in EU and competition law.
In addition, Maria is a member of Hannes Snellman’s Corporate Citizenship working group and actively engages in developing the Finnish legal profession through initiatives concerning equality and diversity. She is a Senior Advisor for UN Women Finland, member of the Finnish Bar Association’s Professional Committee and International Women’s Forum Finland, and board member of FIDE Finland. Maria is also co-founder and co-host of Leadcast, one of Finland’s most popular business podcasts.
