Serge Muyldermans, PhD
Professor, Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Immunology at Vrije Universiteit Brussel

Serge Muyldermans obtained a PhD at the ‘Vrije Universiteit Brussel’ in 1982. He was a postdoc at this university at the time the functional Heavy-chain only antibodies were discovered in camelids. He developed a streamlined method to identify rapidly antigen-specific, single-domain antibody fragments derived from the unique Heavy chain antibodies of camelids. In December 2001, he co-founded Ablynx-NV, to actively develop protein therapeutics based on single variable domains or NanobodiesTM. In 2003, Serge Muyldermans became professor at the ‘Vrije Universiteit Brussel’ where he has been exploring new applications of Nanobodies as a research tool, for diagnostics and therapy.
