Kent BakerHead of IP and Licensing at u-blox
Kent has over three decades of hands-on business, technology, and intellectual property expertise. He has served in key roles developing global intellectual property asset and innovation strategies for several Fortune 100 companies including PARC Xerox and Qualcomm. As the Chief Intellectual Property Officer at PARC, he harmonized laboratory research with product development to drive early stage technology monetization through joint ventures, patent sales and licensing, and product commercialization. As Vice President of Intellectual Property for Qualcomm, he set up the patent and standards policy divisions. He actively consults with start-ups, small, medium and multi-national businesses and was an original member of Tech Reserve’s Innovation Banking group. His current role as Head of IP and Standards for u-blox AG has broadened Kent’s understanding and appreciation of the patent licensing paradox experienced by implementers of standard essential patents (SEPs).
Kent earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of California San Diego, his B.S.M.E/E.E. degree from the University of Nevada-Reno, his law degree from McGeorge, and is a registered patent attorney. He is a Distinguished Lecturer at San Diego State University and has also worked with Stanford University's Media X organization matching technology to business model innovations. Kent maintains a strong interest in international intellectual property rights and continues to work with businesses, governments, regulatory agencies, patent offices, scientific communities, and standards organizations in China, India, Vietnam, European Union, and the U.S. developing national and industry specific intellectual property policy and monetization best practices.
