Janne Valkonen is currently working as a Discipline Leader for Cold Climate Advisory Services of DNV GL Maritime Advisory in Norway. Mr. Valkonen is a naval architect who graduated from Helsinki University of Technology with an M.Sc. degree in Arctic Marine Technology. He has more than 15 years of experience in cold climate ship operations, field investigations, and ice loads on ships. He is currently working on projects related to IMO Polar Code compliance, ship ice-class, winterization, and shipping risks. Previously he has worked as a senior researcher in the Arctic Research Programme in the Research and Innovation department of DNV GL in Norway. The research focused on problems related to Arctic shipping especially ship performance in ice as well as local and local ice loads on the ships' hull. Mr. Valkonen has wide experience on ice-going ships and icebreakers from various full-scale ship ice tests and research projects and in model-scale testing of ships from the time when he worked in the ice tank of Aalto University. He has also extensive knowledge of Arctic fieldwork on sea ice and land including the study of sea ice and snow.'
