Jean Qiu
Chief Technology Officer, Founder at Nexcelom Bioscience

Over the past fifteen years at Nexcelom Bioscience, known for image-based cell counting and analysis systems, Dr. Qiu’s team has developed chip-based, automated, bench-top cell counters for oncology, immunology, cell therapy during discovery, process development and manufacturing. In order to accurately count primary cells and measure viability of samples with heterogeneous compositions and debris such as PBMCs, splenocytes, tumor digests, her team has expanded the viability stain beyond trypan blue to include dual-nuclear stains AO/PI.

Prior to founding Nexcelom Bioscience, Dr. Qiu worked for 3M Company for more than a decade, where she was a co-inventor of the first blue-green semiconductor laser. She also worked for a biotech start-up, as its Director of Process Development and Manufacturing, where she developed optical sensors and established its manufacturing process.

Dr. Qiu earned her PhD in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1990. She has published papers in peer-reviewed academic journals and holds 26 US patents. Awards received include the Rank Prize for Opto-Electronics, UK, 1993, and 3M Company’s Excellent Record of Invention Award. In 2006, Dr. Qiu was honored by the Boston Woman’s Business Journal with the Hall of Fame Award.
