W11 - Creating Psychological Safety on Your Jobsites

Wednesday, October 26
11:45 AM – 12:45 PM

We know WHY psychological safety is important in the workplace. But HOW do you go about changing the culture and WHAT should you be focusing on for impactful results?

The construction industry is plagued with a reputation of misogyny and disrespect. Some of it well-earned, but, despite our best efforts, really hard to shake off. At SAIT we are training the next generation of the construction workforce. SAIT course outlines do not cover psychological safety, but we still integrate these critical concepts into our training. This session will cover how YOU can determine the real climate of psychological safety on your jobsites and how you can start improving the reality to change the construction narrative. A balanced workforce is a better workforce where everyone benefits. Let's get started!

Speaker: Reva Ramsden, SAIT

W25 - BUILDEX Keynote: Navigating Disruption and Rethinking Supply Chains

Wednesday, October 26
12:30 PM – 3:45 PM

The construction supply chain is largely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The problems posed by the pandemic as well as new problems continue to ripple throughout the industry. How are these problems interrelated? Why have we not seen a return to normal yet? Will we ever?

The speaker will draw on interviews from mechanical and general contractors to suppliers, and architects, as well as on his experience consulting and prototyping new solutions with the federal government of Canada to reveal the wide-ranging factors that have impacted the supply chain. Participants will learn about the background of the supply chain crisis and how issues ranging from climate change, working from home and pandemic consumer trends, as well as global conflicts are impacting our industry. Economic conditions will be considered and real examples from the industry explored. The rest of the session will explore how the construction industry can work together to mitigate these problems.

Speaker: Cole Webber, Cole Webber Productions, Inc.

T14 - The Future of Insurability in the Construction Industry

Thursday, October 27
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Over the past 10 years, the insurance landscape has changed drastically in the construction industry. As projects have become more complex and delivery methods have changed, several new risks have emerged. As such, coverage has been increasingly challenging to acquire and underwriters are asking a whole new set of questions. What claims are now being paid, and is there a possibility that these items may not be covered in the future? Join us as we seek to answer these questions and discuss the future of insurance in the construction industry.

Speaker: Colin Hasick, Marsh Canada Ltd.

D01 - Building Better with Exterior Insulated Sheathing: A Live Build Demo (Nexxgen Building Systems)

Wednesday, October 26, 2022
10:00 AM – 10:30 AM

What if you could build a net-zero ready exterior wall by using OSB? Building to net-zero standards will soon become the new normal and builders need solutions that solve the problems they face today and fulfill the code requirements of tomorrow.

Join this session to experience a live build of two wall assemblies: one built using exterior insulated sheathing and one built using traditional building materials. You’ll see firsthand how exterior insulated sheath results in a more energy efficient wall that is built in a fraction of time compared to traditional building materials.

Exterior insulated sheathing combines sheathing with other layers of the building envelope, such as insulation and a rainscreen, into one product to streamline the construction process and eliminate thermal bridging without extra construction steps or tradesmen.

Are you interested in building better using simple solutions? If so, this demonstration is for you.

2:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Energy use monitoring is an integral part of any smart home. It helps you keep tabs on your home by notifying you when devices are on or off, and monitors home energy usage in real-time, for a safer and more efficient home.

Homes are soon expected to become the single largest consumers of electricity and the biggest contributor of carbon dioxide emissions.  The COVID-19 pandemic has further changed way we live and work, resulting in home energy usage increasing by 20% across many communities.  Today, we live in an electrified world where nearly everything is connected, and the home is no exception. To measure, control, and protect this home ecosystem, we need insight from the grid to plug.

Join this session to discover smart and sustainable solutions that are a perfect fit for this purpose.
