Charles has a Master’s Degree in Security and Risk Management, is a Fellow of the Security Institute where he sits on the Academic Board and is a Specialist with the Institute of Risk Management. He is also a Chartered Security Professional, and is currently reading for an MLitt in Terrorism Studies at St Andrews University. His final dissertation relates to current regulations and initiatives in place to protect ports and terminals, and he has recently written an article related to this subject for Aberystwyth University.

Since 2001 Charles has delivered sensitive security and risk surveys globally, including counter terrorism plans and procedures, whilst also teaching the same discipline at a number of levels. He has delivered numerous security and counter terrorist workshops and spoken at risk conferences.

Charles served with the Royal Military Police for 22 years specialising in security, close protection and counter terrorism, completing a number of operational tours, before being assigned instructional roles related to security, anti-terrorist training and advice.

Since 2003 Charles has been heavily involved in maritime security, concentrating on counter terrorism and anti-piracy strategies. He has carried out numerous Port Facility Security Assessments, and has project managed a similar number of port and terminal security surveys.
