Ben studied Chemistry at the University of Durham, England, before joining ICI, UK’s largest chemical company. Diagnosed with HIV in 2000, he joined his local patient support group, North Yorkshire AIDS Action. He developed an interest in HIV treatment, and joined the UK Community Advisory Board for HIV in 2002, becoming its Chair in 2003. He is a Community Representative on the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit Patient and Public Involvement Group (MRC CTU PPI Group). He has been a patient representative on several clinical trial steering groups, and runs regular workshops on Patient and Public Involvement.
