Oren Cohen, M.D., F.I.D.S.A. serves as Chief Medical Officer and Global Head of Clinical Pharmacology Services for Covance, the drug development organization within LabCorp. He is also Consulting Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. As a student, he worked in laboratories in the National Cancer Institute and had the opportunity to do immunologic investigations on patients with an emerging acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, prior to the discovery of HIV. Dr. Cohen earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, where he completed a year of research on HIV biology in the laboratory of Dr. Dani Bolognesi, including evaluation of the efficacy of AZT in the pivotal clinical trial that led to approval of the first anti-HIV drug. He served his internship and residency in internal medicine at the New York Hospital – Cornell University Medical Center. Dr. Cohen completed his fellowship in infectious diseases at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and remained at NIAID following fellowship as Medical Officer and Investigator in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation under the direction of Dr. Anthony Fauci. His research at that time focused on the pathogenesis of HIV infection, including detailed immunologic and virologic characterization of a cohort of HIV-infected individuals who did not experience progressive disease over long periods of time. He then served as Assistant Director for Medical Affairs for the Institute. Over the last 19 years, Dr. Cohen has worked in the biotechnology and CRO space, as Chief Medical Officer for 3 different companies. He has also led the Clinical Pharmacology/Early Phase Clinical Trials business for 2 of those companies. Dr. Cohen has been Board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has co-authored more than 60 scientific papers and book chapters, and is a past recipient of the NIH Merit Award and the Kinyoun Award for Outstanding Contributions to NIAID.
