Donald Sheetz"The Voice" at Connecticut Maritime Association
A graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a BS degree, and Golden Gate University with an MBA, Don is a long-time member of the maritime and oil industries, first serving as a licensed deck officer, then working for Chevron in various capacities, cities and countries, before a short career as a crude oil and products broker at First National in Norwalk, Connecticut. From 1991 into 2009 Don worked for Vanuatu Maritime Services, retiring as the Executive Vice President and Deputy Commissioner of Maritime Affairs, running all international operations of the ship registry.
In retirement, Don has kept busy with volunteer work recording books, magazines, and other publications for the blind; refurbishing houses for those in need with HomeFront, HandyDandy Handyman, and Habitat for Humanity. He volunteers at a local elementary school that serves the children of migrant and immigrant Guatemalans, Mexicans and Haitians. He has narrated a dozen on-line courses for Seamen’s Church Institute and the National Cargo Bureau; narrated two videos for non-profit organizations; and provides the house announcements for Orange County Children’s Theater in California. For the last decade plus Don was also the Voice of the Connecticut Maritime Association and beginning in 2018 became the Voice of SHIPPINGInsight.
Previous industry and personal accomplishments/awards include: Chairman of the Connecticut Pilot Commission; Vice Chairman of the USCG Navigation Safety Advisory Council; Deputy Chairman (twice) of the Marine Accident Investigators International Forum; USCG Meritorious Public Service Award; HomeFront Keystone Award; Volunteer of the Year 2018 at Hope Rural School; Knight of the Year, 2019, Knights of Columbus, Council 6241.
Don has been married to June for the last 5 decades and they have two adult “boys;” two amazing daughters-in-law; and two beautiful granddaughters.
