José RivasPartner at Bird & Bird (Belgium) LLP
José is a partner in our Competition & EU Law practice group, based in Brussels, where he has been practising since 1987.
His practice covers all aspects of competition and EU law including articles 101 and 102 TFEU, state aid, merger control and public procurement. José has extensive experience of representing leading US, Japanese and European clients across a broad range of industries, including aviation, ICT, media, retail, sports, food & beverages and the interface between IP and competition.
José also has extensive litigation experience before the European Courts in Luxembourg, having represented clients in almost 100 cases, including three in the “Grand Chamber” of the European Court of Justice.
José has represented clients under investigation, obtained phase I and phase II merger control clearance and filed complaints with the European Commission and other national competition authorities. He regularly organises anti-trust audits to help identify current or potential infringements and devises compliance programmes to help prevent future infringements. José obtained the first amicus curiae intervention of the EU Commission before the Spanish Supreme Court.
Prior to joining us in 2009, José was head of a leading US firm’s Brussels office and was head and co-head of the firm’s European competition group for a total of nine years.
José is the Editor of the World Competition, Law and Economics Journal (Kluwer), has written extensively on competition law and is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars. He is a visiting professor on Competition Law and State Aid at the College of Europe (Natolin campus).
