Speaker

Profile

Ian Lowles works for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority as its Strategy Implementation Manager for the Sellafield Site ensuring the tactical delivery of the NDA’s national strategy for the management of nuclear fuel, special nuclear materials and radioactive waste. As spent fuel reprocessing comes to an end Ian’s role is increasingly focussed on the transition out of operations and to the important task of cleaning up and decommissioning the Sellafield site.Prior to joining the NDA Ian worked for eleven years as a nuclear regulator for the Environment Agency. In that time Ian regulated the Sellafield site, in particular its reprocessing facilities, high level waste and liquid effluent treatment plants as well as the site’s supporting infrastructure. In 1996 Ian joined Westlakes Scientific Consulting Ltd where he undertook environmental consultancy work in the field of air pollution for a number of industrial clients including the nuclear sector.Ian has a degree in chemistry and a PhD in nuclear physics.Outside of work Ian can be found walking the Cumbrian Fells and on those occasionally when he cannot be found it’s because he’s getting horribly lost during an orienteering competition.
