Nick Carroll
Head of Transformation, Design and Planning, Digital Health R&D at AstraZeneca


During his 34 years at AstraZeneca, Nick has moved through a number of line management and project management roles within the business and is currently the Head of Transformation – Design & Planning within Digital Health R&D. Nick’s academic background is as a physiologist and biochemist, obtaining his PhD degree at University of Newcastle before moving into the Pharma industry.  Within AstraZeneca, Nick has led local clinical study teams based in UK, and based in Central and Eastern Europe.  He has held project leadership positions in cardiovascular and also as global product lead in Oncology.  He was head of governance audit for R&D and was latterly chief of staff and Head of Oncology Portfolio & Project Management before taking on his present role as lead of the Design & Planning team.

The Design & Planning team is using data and analytics to reimagine the traditional study design process, eliminating inefficiencies and creating a one-stop shop for all design and set up needs to allow experts (from science and clinical operations) the space to create breakthrough patient and site-centric trial designs beyond that which is predictable.

About Digital Health R&D

Digital Health R&D is a newly formed function within AZ’s Oncology R&D organisation but serves across AZ’s BioPharmaceutical R&D organisation as well. The function has in part been formed from a large transformation programme aligned to AZ2025. The programme is already mobilised and delivering benefits at pace, including acceleration of the portfolio, $100M benefits in 2019 and improved data quality.
