Evolva and Grace Breeding form partnership for biofertilizer development

Grace Breeding Ltd, based in Israel, and Swiss biotech company Evolva Holding AG plan to produce a biofertilizer with the aim of replacing nitrogen crop fertilizers.

The aim is to combine Grace Breeding Ltd’s proprietary nitrogenous technology (NFT) biofertilizer with Evolva’s precision fermentation platform, and create a streamlined process for the production of the NFT biofertilizer.

Based near Basel, Evolva AG uses fermentation to produce what the company describes as ‘nature-based ingredients.’ Grace Breeding’s NFT uses non-pathogenic bacteria to enable crops to fix nitrogen and reduce the need for mineral fertilizers. Grace Breeding says the product can be used across a range of crops, including corn, wheat, soy and rice.

Assaf Dotan, Chief Executive Officer of Grace Breeding Ltd. Said: ”We are excited about this collaboration with Evolva since this partnership provides tremendous support to our bio-fertilizer supply chain and brings us closer to getting our novel NFT solution to farmers. Having access to Evolva’s precision-fermentation technology will accelerate our ability to get our NFT product to farmers, who are desperate to address the economic impact on soil and climate resulting from use of conventional urea-based fertilizers.”

Grace Breeding said that its NFT product in combination with Evolva’s fermentation technology has shown positive results in farm-scale corn and wheat field tests in Israel and is currently being tested in Brazil. The remaining field tests are expected to conclude during 2023, the company said.
