Profile

Luis Vivas-Alegre joined the European Commission in 2014. Since September 2016 he works in the Directorate General Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) as Policy Coordinator in the Farm to Fork Strategy Unit. He develops and implements coordination activities between SANTE food policies, the European Food Safety Authority and EU Research and Innovation policies, this is Horizon 2020 and the future Horizon Europe. Before joining DG SANTE, Luis worked as Research Policy Officer in the Agri-Food Chain Unit of the Directorate General Research and Innovation.

Prior to his contribution to the activities of the European Commission, Luis worked as a Scientific Officer in the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Biological Hazards Unit (2007-2014), providing scientific and technical coordination to risk assessment activities that support EU food safety policymaking. Before joining EFSA, he worked as Veterinary Officer for the Food Standards Agency, United Kingdom (2001-2007), developing and implementing food chain official controls on food safety and animal health and welfare.

Luis is a BSc graduate on Veterinary Medicine and Science from the University of Leon (Spain), and holds two MSc degrees namely on Meat science (University of Bristol, United Kingdom) and on Food regulatory affairs (combined degree University College Dublin and Ulster University, Ireland and United Kingdom). He has co-authored several publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature and contributed to many EFSA’s scientific opinions and reports.
