Shane is a pioneer in the movement to empower individuals with their data and to establish online privacy and control of data as a human right. He leads in North America and its global developer and incubator efforts. Based in the UK, is a platform that allows individuals to aggregate their data securely from over 15,000 sources and share it privately with a new generation of data-driven apps and services that respect individual ownership and control of their data.

Shane is also the co-founder and executive chair of UBDI (, which lets individuals participate in the economics of the data they generate. UBDI is focused on the $76 billion market research industry.

Shane was previously co-founder and CEO of Personal, which merged with in 2017. Personal is recognized for having led the development of the user-centric personal data ecosystem and was named the first consumer company to build a privacy-by-design platform and business model. Before that, he was co-founder and CEO of The Map Network, which became the world’s largest location data platform after being acquired by NAVTEQ. He served as the global head of the mobile mapping and location data services at NAVTEQ and subsequently Nokia after they acquired NAVTEQ.

Shane’s first startup, Witten Technologies, which developed underground imaging and mapping technology, was named Software Innovation of the Year in 2004 by The Wall Street Journal. He also helped launch the non-profit Crisis Group, now based in Brussels, while at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace directly after college. Shane is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, was named a Privacy by Design Ambassador, serves on the board of the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation, is a member of the Aspen Institute’s Communications & Society Program, and previously served as Vice Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Data. He speaks regularly on issues of privacy, data, identity and technology and his interviews have appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox News, Financial Times, The Economist, Associated Press, Tech Crunch, Mashable, MIT Technology Review, Vox, The Verge, Fortune and Bloomberg.
