John Schmidt is a partner in the Chicago-based law firm Mayer Brown LLP where his practice focuses on large-scale infrastructure. He represented the City of  Chicago and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico  in the long-term leases of the Chicago Skyway and the San Juan Airport,  the first privatizations of a major American toll road or airport.  He has represented public and private parties in a wide range of other infrastructure transactions.  He was named by the Financial Times in 2010 as one of the 10 outstanding “innovative lawyers” in the U.S. for his work in developing new structures for financing of infrastructure.   He served in the Clinton Administration as Ambassador and Chief U.S. Negotiator to the global trade talks that created the World Trade Organization and as the Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Justice Department  with responsibility for all aspects of the civil representation of the U.S. Government.  He also chaired the state-city agency that redeveloped Navy Pier in downtown Chicago and was transition coordinator and  chief of staff for Richard M. Daley upon his election as Mayor of Chicago.  He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Law School.
