Mike Garratt

Chairman at MDS Transmodal

Mike has a first degree in economics and a masters degree in Transport Design.  Following initial employment as a local government transport planner, a research associate at Leicester University and a lecturer at the University of Leicester and Liverpool, Mike co-founded the transport consultancy MDS Transmodal, which has now been trading since 1983.  He specialises in shipping, port and rail freight economics and markets. Mike has directed numerous studies for government, local authorities and the private sector. 

Mike’s private sector clients range from shipping lines, major ports, rail operators, property developers and financial institutions and his work has included many sale, purchase and re-financing due diligence studies.  Under Mike’s leadership, MDS Transmodal has developed the GB Freight Model (which forms the freight element of the UK National Transport Model) and global databases and forecasting models for the demand, supply and profitability of liner shipping.
