Ian is a commercial/admiralty lawyer with 40 years industry experience. He provides his client base of ship owners, managers and insurers with multi-jurisdictional experience in respect of vessel and offshore casualties; cargo loss and damage; salvage and the contractual and negligence claims that flow from such incidents. In addition, he advises on wreck removal, STCW and MARPOL issues, piracy, international conventions, dangerous goods, crew prosecutions, HSE matters, classification society and underwriter requirements, disputes arising from OCIMF/SIRE & CDI vetting and ship management contractual disputes.
Ian is a Master Mariner who served at sea for 12 years followed by ship owning company director and ship management appointments in senior corporate/general/risk management roles. He has in trade associations and industry bodies including Lloyd's Salvage Group, (the custodians of LOF) the IMO (as an accredited representative of a consultative organisation), Intertanko and Intermanager. He has also acted as a governmental adviser in respect of proposed shipping legislation. He is regular public speaker, lecturer and conference chair, with articles published in trade press (Lloyd's List, Lloyd's Ship Manager and Maritime Risk International) and features in legal video blogs.
