Bill is an Expert, an Expert Witness, Arbitrator and Mediator in a wide range of disputes, both domestic and international.
He has acted as expert and expert witness since 1977 in litigation and arbitration cases for individual and corporate clients including many large insurance companies. These cases are chiefly related to his extensive experience in general contract interpretation, the design and construction of many small and large global projects.
Bill is a founder member of the Mediators Institute Ireland which embraces all the fields in which mediation is an important method of dispute resolution; many of his current mediation and conciliation appointments, and some of his arbitral appointments, are for non-construction disputes. He was a member of the Irish Insurance Ombudsman Council from its inception, in 1992 to 1998.
Bill lectures and tutors extensively on conflict management generally, especially on arbitration, mediation & conciliation, negotiation and conflict management. He was a council member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators from 1991 to 1998 and, from 1993 to 1995, he chaired its Professional Development Committee which oversaw that Institute's education and training programme worldwide.
Bill designs and leads training programmes in dispute resolution methods and skills worldwide, for national and international, governmental and professional bodies, trade associations and individuals. He also provides a wide range of related distance-learning courses through Advanced Training Services and is the Training & Education Officer for SICA-FICA, the Foundation for International Commercial Arbitration & Alternative Dispute Resolution based in The Hague. He set up Advanced Training Services in 1996 to provide distance-learning in conflict management. He also designs dispute resolution systems and trains others to do the same for their organisations; this is part of a wider process, referred to as Auditing for Conflict Management.
