James Herbert is the communications adviser to the International Salvage Union. He is a published author on media response to shipping casualties, marine salvage and wreck removal with more than 25 years’ experience in communications. He spent four years as an army officer before training as a newspaper and broadcast journalist and working for the BBC for a number of years producing current affairs programmes. After the BBC, James joined the Royal Dutch Shell Group and became head of Group media relations and was responsible for the media response to numerous major incidents around the world, many of them in shipping. James left Shell to become director of communications for one of the largest units of the UK’s Department of Health. After four years he left government service to set up his own communications consultancy. Throughout his career, James has handled hundreds of incidents with significant media exposure.
