Tris Newey
Policy and Resilience Lead at Maritime & Coastguard Agency

Tris has over fifteen years’ experience in maritime search and rescue, beginning his career with HM Coastguard in 2004 as a Watch Officer at Brixham and Liverpool MRCCs. In 2007 he moved to Coastal Operations, spending seven years as a Sector Manager, recruiting, training and managing the volunteer Coastguard Rescue Service in the Bristol Channel. In this time he became proficient in various technical rescue disciplines, including rope, mud, water rescue and missing person (land search) techniques. In 2014 he re-joined Maritime Operations and moved to the National Maritime Operations Centre in Fareham, Hampshire, where he took up the post of Maritime Operations Commander, a senior watchkeeping position with responsibilities for ensuring the newly created UK National Network of coordination centres delivered an effective service. In 2016 Tris took on the role of Policy and Resilience Lead at MCA headquarters in Southampton with responsibility for developing civil resilience policy and review of the agency Major Incident Plan. He developed the Mass Rescue Operations Framework for the UK Search and Rescue Region, and engaged with the UK civil resilience partnerships in developing multi-agency plans to ensure the UK is prepared for a maritime mass rescue incident. Tris has an honours degree in Physical Oceanography from the University of Plymouth and is a member of the Emergency Planning Society. Prior to joining HM Coastguard he worked in commercial oceanography, undertaking deep-water met-ocean surveys world-wide.
