Benjamin Cohen
Founder and Chief Executive Officer at T-REX

Profile

Benjamin B. Cohen is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of T-REX. He is also Chairman of the company’s board of directors. Benjamin is responsible for T-REX’s corporate direction and vision. Under his leadership, T-REX’s enterprise data management service and analytics platform are facilitating unprecedented new investment in complex markets.

Prior to founding T-REX, Benjamin led an international team in the Energy Markets Division at Macquarie Bank. In 2008, he spearheaded an initiative to develop a new market for asphalt derivatives. The implementation of the new market succeeded in bringing previously unattainable financial stability to the infrastructure sector, with greater transparency leading to billions of dollars in cost savings and risk reduction for construction companies, municipalities, and taxpayers.

Amidst the 2008 financial crisis, Benjamin saw tremendous opportunity in building financial infrastructure for traditionally riskier markets. Fixed income professionals had historically lacked the tools necessary to adequately assess risks in complex markets, hampering large-scale investments in high-value sectors. Leveraging a deep background in structured finance and esoterics, Benjamin founded T-REX in 2012 to drive financial sustainability and liquidity across these key markets. Today, T-REX fills a critical technology gap for alternatives, equipping professionals with data, analytics, reporting, and collaboration solutions designed for the nuances of these asset classes. Utilized in transactions across institutional investors, major investment banks, rating agencies, and issuers, T-REX empowers responsible finance by improving transparency at every stage of the investment lifecycle. T-REX has been used to facilitate $7 billion in issuance since 2016.

A structured finance expert, Benjamin provides market commentary for a variety of media outlets, including Bloomberg, Fortune, Institutional Investor Journal, Structured Credit Investor, and Asset Securitization Report. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Structured Finance Industry Group’s Esoteric Committee and speaks on finance, technology, and renewables at major industry forums.

Benjamin holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and is committed to building a company with a broad impact on long-term financial sustainability.

PPIF 2020 - Roundtable (5), Jan 23:

What’s it Really Worth? Addressing the Challenges of Risk, Valuations, and Performance Across Private Investment Portfolios: The maturation of data management, analytics, and collaboration for complex sectors

Description:

Amidst the sustained low-rate environment, total investment in higher-yielding alternative investments have climbed consistently in the last decade - but what is it really worth?

T-REX CEO Benjamin Cohen will lead a discussion on some of the challenges facing alternative investment professionals today, outlining the deep impact that modern data and analytics workflow will have on unlocking greater opportunity in these sectors. Among the topics discussed:

  • Standardization and centralization of data - operating off a single source of truth
  • Platformization of alternative asset classes - consolidating all workflows (internal and external) in a shared platform for true transparency and collaboration
  • Better analytical tools fueling greater speed and precision of insights
  • Driving consistency across an organization and across all deal workflow
  • Leveraging technology to scale asset-class subject matter expertise

With alternative markets undergoing this critical digital transformation, roundtable participants will be encouraged to weigh in on their experiences evaluating risk, valuation, and performance in these complex sectors without the standard tools/intelligence available for more liquid asset classes.
