James Penfold trained in Physics and Radiation and Environmental Protection, and has worked as an environmental consultant for 24 years. He applies his core knowledge of evaluating and mitigating radiological risks to provide strategic advice in relation to radioactive waste disposal, contaminated land management and the restoration of nuclear sites. He has a thorough appreciation of the key issues for nuclear decommissioning, and a track record of applying optimisation and safety assessment to identify the best solutions to environmental challenges. He has worked for site operators, Government and regulators, and also acts as an international expert for organisations like IAEA. As well as supporting nuclear decommissioning in the UK, he undertakes projects in Canada, Japan, Sweden and Italy, as well as international projects managed by IAEA and NEA. James is a director of Quintessa Limited.
