Katja SalovaaraSenior Investment Officer - Private Equity at New York City Retirement Systems
Katja Salovaara serves as a Senior Investment Officer-Private Equity in the Bureau of Asset Management at the NYC Comptroller’s Office. She works closely with the Head of Private Equity in pursuing new initiatives, making investment recommendations and helping to manage the approximately $24 billion private equity portfolio of the five New York City retirement systems.
Prior to joining the Bureau of Asset Management, Ms Salovaara was Senior Portfolio Manager-Private Equity at Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance Company in Helsinki, Finland. Ms Salovaara joined Ilmarinen in 2000 to establish their private equity investment program. At Ilmarinen, she was most recently responsible for all private equity fund investments outside of Finland and designed the investment strategy, performed due diligence and made investment recommendations for private equity funds and served on a number of limited partner advisory committees. Ms Salovaara also set up the PE co-investment program in 2010 and was closely involved in all co-investments. During Ms Salovaara’s 19 years at Ilmarinen the PE portfolio grew from less than 100 million invested to 3,6 bn euros invested (circa 7 % of Ilmarinen’s AUM) and was the best performing asset class at Ilmarinen.
Prior to joining Ilmarinen, Ms Salovaara gained private equity investment experience in London at Shell Pensions Management Services and Pantheon Ventures. She holds a Master’s degree in economics from the University of Helsinki and is a CFA charterholder.
