Mat is a professional antitrust economist with nearly 35 years of experience. Who’s Who Legal 2023 ranks Mat as an economist Thought Leader and describes Mat as “a super smart competition economist“, who "is gifted with the ability to clearly communicate complex ideas“, and "Mat is really client focused and responsive“.Prior to joining AlixPartners, Mat was chief economist in the competition department at Ashurst LLP. He started his career as an economist at the UK Office of Fair Trading.

Mat has acted on more than 30 Phase 2 merger proceedings in the UK and Europe, and many 100s of Phase 1 cases.

Mat has also written widely on the subject of UK/EC merger control, including in the International Comparative Guide to Merger Control (including matters such as the trends in merger control, the CMA’s use of pricing pressure tests in Asda/Sainsbury, mergers in dynamic markets, the failing firm defence, and merger efficiencies). He is also a co-author of ‘UK Merger Control Law and Practice’ (3rd edition).
