Profile
Kate is a highly experienced maritime researcher in the social sciences, with extensive project leadership skills and interdisciplinary experience. Kate’s international research expertise focuses on the human side of shipping including seafarer’s welfare, gender equality and diversity, management and leadership and on-board safety culture.
Dr Pike will be leading the research element of this project. She has demonstrable knowledge and applied expertise in the socio-economical sciences and gender issues, in particular, from experience leading teams from Nigeria, China and the UK during the Gender, Empowerment and Multi-Cultural Crews (GEM) Project which examined gender issues from these countries’ perspectives. The project was shortlisted for the Time’s Higher Award in 2017 and resulted in two peer reviewed papers and has been entered as a case-study for the UK’s 2021 academic Research Excellence Framework (REF) by Solent University.
Dr Pike regularly speaks on maritime gender topics and is highly involved in support networks in this area.
