Crew Connect Blog - the Changing Landscape of ShippingIn May 2016, CrewConnect Europe brought seafarers and ship owners from around the world to Copenhagen to discuss the topics most important to both the shipping industry, and the people at its core. Key talking points moved from training and regulations to the economic downturn as the struggle to keep up with a rapidly changing market became apparent. But with the January 2017 deadline looming for IMO’s revised STCW regulations, one question echoed above the rest: Will we be ready?

#1. Training and Certification: Can we get there in time?

The Manila STCW amendments, which come into play at the end of this year, was inevitably the most pressing subject governing this year’s event. Questions surrounding the readiness of the world’s seafarers for the impending landscape changes were many, as ship owners strive to get their workforce up to speed, and training facilities struggle to meet the growing demand.

#2. Economic Downturn: Can we afford the costs among the cuts?

In the face of the economic downturn that has left the shipping industry in turmoil, demands have increased in recent times urging ship owners and manning agencies to keep pace with a transforming landscape. Yet, the relentless cuts facing the training and manning sectors as a result of the crisis have left many asking how they can meet revised standards without the necessary resources in place.

#3. Digital Advancements: Can we bank on the technology?

Despite being the least environmentally damaging form of commercial transport, the shipping industry is facing further environmental regulations and stricter standards on emissions. Ship owners and crews are turning towards new forms of technology for a solution, but concerns are being raised on the reliance of such tools, many of which require further testing, and on whether or not they will prove to be the right long-term investment.

#4. Ageing Workforce: Can we future-proof the industry?

Apart from keeping up with a rapidly changing industry, those driving the shipping trade are also faced with a reality check: In an ageing workforce, how can we future-proof the industry? With a core focus on generation X and Y, questions are being raised about how we can get a younger workforce in place in time for recovery.
