Christian Haas is a professor for sea ice geophysics and remote sensing at the University of Bremen and Head of the Sea Ice Section at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany. His main research interest is the role of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice in the climate, eco-, and human systems. He has pioneered operational ice thickness measurements and has applied them in a wide range of scientific, ice engineering, and polar shipping projects. Christian was the cruise leader of the polar night leg of the recent MOSAiC project, including during the midwinter, high-Arctic icebreaker resupply voyages.
