Matt Lee
Partner at Lindsay Francis & Mangan (Australia)
Speaker

Profile

Matt helps clients successfully resolve complex and important business disputes, often in a cross-border context. Prior to joining Lindsay Francis & Mangan, Matt ran the Australian operations for the world’s largest legal finance company, Burford Capital, and, before that, worked in the New York office of Quinn Emanuel for over seven years. Matt was a Fulbright W.G. Walker Scholar at Harvard Law School, and is admitted in Australia and New York.

Clients have noted in Chambers and Partners that “Matt is extremely responsive, has excellent commercial awareness and is technically astute” and “Matt is a sophisticated operator who has the experience and insight required by clients to navigate complex litigation to reduce their risk and maximize upside.” From his time at Burford, Matt brings to the firm’s clients deep experience and expertise in legal finance and the strategic considerations litigation funding and contingent risk insurance involves, for plaintiffs and defendants.

Matt’s commercial disputes experience includes first chair advocacy and managing large teams of lawyers in significant and “bet the company” complex litigation, commercial arbitration, investor-state arbitration, and asset recovery and award/judgment enforcement matters. He has particular experience in complex damages and financial issues, regularly working with leading experts. He has litigated or arbitrated matters involving complex financial products; mergers and acquisition-related disputes; structured finance; creditor, loan and financing-related disputes; foreign investment disputes; disputes concerning mining, energy, commodities, renewables, infrastructure and construction projects; shareholder disputes; insurance; data privacy; real estate; technology and intellectual property; business torts and directors’ duties; and insolvency-related disputes. Matt also has experience advising government clients on regulatory matters, constitutional law, major litigation, and appellate work, including before the High Court of Australia.

In addition to being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow at the Law Foundation of South Australia, and having taught courses at New York University and Adelaide Law School, Matt’s thought leadership has been published in many books, articles, and speaking engagements.
