Berlin is home to one of the most vital health sector industries in Europe

Berlin – Where the world comes to visit
Soaring numbers of tourists have been flocking to Berlin for years now. The city welcomed more than 12 million visitors last year alone. Berlin is also one of the most popular venues for large conferences and conventions, with 7.7 million of the more than 33 million overnight stays in 2016 attributed to this sector. At 15 percent, medicine, academia, science and research make up the largest share of these conferences and conventions.
With more than 140,000 beds, the city’s ultra-modern and—by international standards—very affordable hotels have the capacity they need to meet demand. That gives the city the ideal infrastructure to host large-scale events like the upcoming BIO-Europe® global partnering event or the annual World Health Summit, the paramount international strategy forum for healthcare policy issues.
In Berlin you’re in good company in the healthcare industry
With 350,000 employees, the health sector is one of the most vital industries in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region. And it is constantly growing. Almost 600 life science businesses operate from here: more than 240 biotec, 300 medical technology, and 30 pharmaceutical companies like Bayer, Pfizer and Sanofi.
Young researchers are launching digital health startups here, and one in eight Berliners is employed in the healthcare sector. The economy also benefits from the impressive education and training landscape. Colleges and universities in Berlin offer 208 programs in health-related subjects alone. All the relevant institutions and contacts can be found in the capital city. It’s where political decision makers, Federal Government institutions, the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association, patients’ representatives, associations and health insurance companies are based.
Berlin makes medical history—every day
Berlin is an excellent location for life sciences and medicine. The region is home to 41 renowned scientific institutions, including the Charité university hospital, the Robert Koch Institute, the Max Delbrück Center (MDC) for Molecular Medicine, the Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin, and the Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Leibniz and Max Planck Institutes. The Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) is the flagship of Berlin’s world-class research institutions. Scientists from Charité and MDC have been carrying out research together at BIH since 2013. BIH is a scientific institution for translational research and systems medicine and is being established as a unique structure in Germany’s biomedical research landscape.
Berlin’s Charité is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. More than 4,500 physicians and scientists carry out research, teach, and treat patients here at the cutting edge of international medicine. The Charité university hospital attracts more third-party funding than any other medical school in Germany. As a metropolis, Berlin offers ideal conditions for close, project-related cooperation between basic researchers, technology developers and clinical researchers. Short distances facilitate exchange and cooperation, also with industry and other hospitals.
The HealthCapital Berlin-Brandenburg is proud to host BIO-Europe for the first time since 2000. My team will work hard to make your stay convenient and successful.
