Profile
The inability to control or efficiently empty the bladder and/or bowel is a common problem in people with neurological injury or diseases (e.g. spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, spina bifida), diabetes, post-operative urinary retention, post-operative ileus, and the elderly. Bowel/bladder dysfunctions are the #1 reason for placement of the elderly into long-term care facilities. Current methods of inducing defecation and urination are invasive, expensive, time consuming, and stigmatizing. Over 2/3 of the spinal injury population must pass a catheter through their urethra into the bladder to void urine. To defecate, the patient or their caregiver are required to insert their fingers into the patient’s anus to stroke the mucosal lining of the rectum to stimulate rectal mechanoreceptors that activate the colon to push the stool into the rectum, where it is manually removed.
