Alex Chalmers is the founder and managing partner of Material Capital Partners, a Charleston, SC based real estate development and investment management firm focused on build-for-rent communities in high growth markets across the Southeast and Midwest U.S.
Previously he was a co-founder of Avenida Capital, a New York real estate investment and development platform that managed over $250 million from US and international institutional investors. Avenida Capital developed 25 projects focused on emerging markets spanning 3,000 multi-family units, 2 million square feet of retail and over 400,000 square feet of commercial space. Avenida was acquired by global asset manager Ashmore Group in 2017 (LSE: ASHM). Prior to Avenida, he was a Principal in the Private Funds Group at Jefferies across the real estate, private credit and technology sectors and held Series 7 and 63 licenses.
Alex holds a Professional Certificate from MIT in Real Estate Development, an MBA from the University of Michigan and a BA from the University of Southern California. He is a member of the NRHC CEO Council, the Urban Land Institute Carolinas Council, YPO Charleston and sits on several non-profit boards.
