João started his Ph.D. in April 2023. His Ph.D. research is part of the European Commission funded project RATION - Risk AssessmenT InnOvatioN for low-risk pesticides, which has been in close collaboration with other H2020 and HORIZON Europe projects. This project aims to address the regulatory constraints hampering the full potential and market reach-out of Low-Risk Pesticides (LRP). Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. JHH (Justus) Wesseler and Dr. K (Kutay) Cingiz, João's research objective is to develop a new and harmonized risk assessment scheme for the approval of LRP, within the EU. The categories of LRP include (i) plant extracts, (ii) semiochemicals like pheromones and allelochemicals, (iii) microbial pesticides and new microbial solutions (phages, protists, microbial consortia) and (iv) ds-RNA pesticides.
