John Welsh offers bioprocess consulting services through Rivanna Bioprocess Solutions LLC. This includes process development and CMC support for biotechnology start-ups as well as providing expertise around downstream separations, high throughput chromatography screening techniques, and modeling approaches.
Prior to consulting, John worked at Merck & Co., Inc. for over eleven years in downstream bioprocessing R&D. He served as purification and overall CMC lead for a number of pipeline programs. This included five IND filings and four late stage programs. He also headed a high throughput screening and automation lab and helped establish Merck’s mechanistic modeling capabilities.
John has a Bachelor of Engineering from Dartmouth College (2004) and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University (2011). He also briefly worked at GlycoFi, Inc. which was acquired by Merck in 2006. He is a co-author on more than twenty peer-reviewed publications and has served as a session chair for AIChE, ACS BIOT, and HTPD conferences as well as a co-organizer of the Recovery Modeling Workshop series. John has also previously been a guest lecturer at Rutgers University and the University of Virginia on the topics of chromatography screening and bioprocess scaling.
