Carmine Ornaghi is Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on empirical industrial organisation, competition policy and innovation, with particular expertise in the pharmaceutical industry. His work has been published in leading international journals, including the Journal of the European Economic Association, the International Journal of Industrial Organization and the Journal of Industrial Economics.

He has led ESRC-funded research on the effects of pharmaceutical mergers on innovation and productivity and has advised DG Competition on competition policy in the pharmaceutical sector. He was also an academic expert on the 2024 European Commission/Lear study on acquisitions of innovative competitors in pharma, including so-called “killer acquisitions”. His recent research examines how pharmaceutical acquisitions affect innovation, inventor mobility and research productivity.
