Gjermund Nese has a Ph.D. from the University of Bergen, his research focusing on energy markets.

Gjermund Nese started working at the Norwegian Competition Authority in 2006. Since 2012 he has been a director for the market department being responsible for the finance and communication markets. He was appointed acting Director general as of February 2025.
