GST & Shipping2030 – A Review

This year’s GST & Shipping2030 was all about collaboration. On the GST side, we are looking at an industry-wide effort to find solutions to reduce air emissions and protect marine life by keeping waters clean. On the Shipping2030 side, we’ve noticed that the industry is keen to digitalise and is seeking opportunities to develop a digital agenda that suits each individual business.
So it turns out today is #InternationalDayOfHappiness and I'm in Copenhagen discussing the future of shipping technology. Pretty happy with that! #GST2030 @KNectMaritime

We’ve taken part of a lot of discussions, and thanks to a handful of our proactive delegates, our speakers’ insights and our attendees’ thoughts are commemorated on social media for all. In only 2 days, we tackled various issues and inefficiencies in the industry, and although we hear a lot of negativity in the news, it has become obvious that there is a handful of maritime leaders who are embracing and driving environmental and technological changes.
Keyword at #GST2030 "collaboration".. Solving problems by working together. Just need to be sure we're solving the right problems. — diane gilpin (@digilpin) March 21, 2018
Transparency and Collaboration in The Maritime Industry
Change is inevitable, and there have been a lot of changes in the last 12 months. We are very proud of bringing together so many maritime professionals who believe and propel the industry’s transformation, and we cannot thank them enough for speaking up at GST & Shipping2030.
Diane Gilpin, Founder CEO at Smart Green Shipping Alliance, at #GST2030 : “if we tell ourselves #shipping is a conservative industry it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. In fact, every industry I have worked in has very similar challenges...

Digital Ships
It was evident that all delegates wanted to hear about digitalisation. After all, the analyses of big data can provide the industry with a picture of its own fuel efficiency, crew performance, and even when maintenance is necessary!
We’ve heard a lot of predictions, but most of all, we heard new ideas and findings that may inspire collaborative efforts in the industry.
The ship of the future will be electric, digital, and connected say ABB.#GST2030 #digitalship #shiptech

Just had a great time moderating a panel discussion at #GST2030 discussing data tracking challenges and opportunities in maritime. The overarching theme is that no one will succeed in isolation. Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration.

Blockchain
One of the most exciting technologies that we discussed is blockchain. Deanna MacDonald of BLOC gave an insightful presentation of what blockchain is and isn’t, and brought exciting developments to the stage. Attendees were lucky to hear the news first-hand: BLOC and Lloyd’s Register Foundation have officially teamed up and will be bringing blockchain pilots to the maritime industry very soon.
The brilliant @DeannaAdell discussing the component parts of blockchain at #GST2030 there's an incredible amount of opportunity in this space but a long road ahead to build systems that are interoperable with the wider industry. pic.twitter.com/s7F1MEA2vP

Meeting Startups On Site
Thanks to Marlink’s Gennaro Faella and Leonardo Zangrando from StartupWharf, we were able to introduce four startup companies tackling today’s maritime issues. We’ve heard from Transmetrics, who leverage AI to make predictive analyses, Work-Rest App, which monitors seafarers’ time spent working and resting, We4Sea, who solve fuel efficiency issues, and SailRouter, the startup that aims to improve energy efficiency.
Come listen to 4 startup pitches at 12.05 by @Transmetrix @workrestapp @SailRouter @Dan_We4Sea at #GST2030 #Shipping2030 conference. Special thanks to @Marlink_News and @StartupWharf for showcasing these innovative companies to the #maritime industry!

Automation and Seafarer Training
When discussing digital technologies and innovation, seafarers cannot be left out of the conversation. Seafarer roles are changing rapidly, and to cement digital culture in an organisation, businesses need to ensure that all members are able to use new innovations.
Sotiris Kambanellas, FML Ship Management Ltd, at #GST2030: Totally disagree that today's crew is undertrained. The problem is that the responsibilities of some of these roles, the captain as one example, has greatly expanded. Automation won't mean we don't need crew...

#Digital transformation is only successful is the #seafarers are on board with it! @OSM_Maritime is on stage
Sustainable Shipping
Sustainability is one of the greatest challenges that the maritime industry is facing long-term. The upcoming environmental regulations on air emissions and ballast water put businesses under pressure to act fast, but informed decisions must be made, which is why GST & Shipping2030 Europe brought together so many maritime leaders to discuss the next steps.
Just moderated a great panel discussion on ‘Addressing the Fundamental Priorities for a Sustainable Shipping Market’ at #GST2030 Amongst the key points made:
1. Need a concerted, substantial and sustained innovation approach globally 2. Proactivity is critical...— Roger Strevens (@RogerStrevens) March 21, 2018
...do or have done to you! 3. One strong suitably ambitious global regulatory framework 4. Set objectives with the progress and commitments already made in mind and 5. Combine primary (eg. wind) and secondary (eg. H2) renewable energy solutions for increased impact.

Marine Fuel Solutions and Options
Air emission reduction is inevitably a part of shipping’s sustainability initiative, and being real about the options out there is a must.
Brent Perry @pbes_energy at #GST2030: no one element of any tech stands in isolation. Whether it's fuel cells, wind, biofuels, batteries... it's all about creating repeatable, usable, reliable, commercially viable solutions that will operate for decades to come. pic.twitter.com/BqkIi06mGq

This year, the judges selected four ground-breaking innovators in the industry who have demonstrated great initiative.
The Green Ship Technology of the Year Award Winner is GEPS Techno for GSIRE, the anti-rolling tank that generates electricity. GSIRE was chosen because “this technology had demonstrated the ability to utilize an existing structure, modify to perform to an improved level and generate a sustainable by-product”, the judges said.
Congratulations to @gepstechno for winning the #GST2030 award: Green Ship Technology of the year #greenshipping pic.twitter.com/iPbcfR8nQi

The Shipping2030 Europe Innovation Award Winner is Singular Point AS for MARis, the cloud based maritime transportation system. The judges were particularly impressed at the scalability of the technology to cater to all ranges of budges and company sizes, whilst able to perform tasks for enhanced logistics & voyage activities.

The Maurice Meehan New Talent Award goes to ShipChain for disrupting freight & logistics using the blockchain. ShipChain won the judges’ approval by identifying the digital trend of blockchain and translating it into a viable tool to capitalize on tracking and tracing activity, improving accountability amongst the whole supply chain.
