Profile
Walter Isenberg is an award-winning hotelier, restaurateur and placemaker with a deep understanding of how to create places people go to, not through. As co-founder and Executive Chairman of the Board of Sage Hospitality Group, Walter helps guide the long-term vision and strategy of the company he founded with Zack Neumeyer in 1984. In this role, he works closely with Sage’s executive leadership team and Board of Directors to support the company’s continued growth, strengthen its culture and ensure the organization remains grounded in its purpose of enriching lives, one experience at a time. Throughout Sage’s growth, Walter has led with heart and has become the embodiment of loving what you do and loving who you do it with.
Over the last four decades, Walter’s leadership has helped shape and grow Sage into one of the country’s most respected hospitality companies, known for excellence in hotel and restaurant operations, real estate investment, development and placemaking. Under his leadership, Sage has built strong relationships with major hotel brands including Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt and IHG, while also developing distinctive independent hotel and restaurant concepts. Today, more than 30 percent of the company’s assets are unique and independent properties. Walter’s career also includes dozens of transformative adaptive reuse projects that have revitalized neighborhoods and communities, including the redevelopment of Denver’s historic Union Station.
A graduate of Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, Walter is a member of the American Hotel & Lodging Association Board of Directors Executive Committee and has served on several brand Owner Advisory Boards. Among his many honors, he was named a 2025 Colorado Business Hall of Fame Laureate and received the 2025 Dana Crawford Award from Colorado Preservation, Inc., recognizing his lasting impact on Colorado’s business community and historic preservation efforts. He also received the 2023 ULI Colorado Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the 2020 Most Admired CEO Pinnacle Award from the Denver Business Journal, and the 2017 Hospitality Design Platinum Circle Award.
