WILLIAM Q. DERROUGH
William Q. Derrough is a Managing Director and Global Head of the Capital Structure Advisory Group (which includes recapitalization and restructuring) of Moelis & Company. Since its inception in July 2008, the group has completed more than 500 engagements (both out of court and in court) representing over $1.2 trillion in liabilities, and is currently engaged in assignments across many industries representing in excess of $250 billion in liabilities. Over the past 10 years, the team has been regularly ranked in the top three both in number of engagements and total dollar volume. Mr. Derrough’s recent engagements include advising clients such as Petrobras ($127 billion), Hertz ($24 billion), Momentive Performance ($4 billion), Brinks Home Security ($2 billion), Ligado Networks ($14 billion), among others, and creditor groups in American Airlines, Intelsat, Mallinckrodt and others. He is currently the lead investment banker to the three courtappointed mediators in connection with the case commenced by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) pursuant to Title III of PROMESA.
From 1998 until 2008, Mr. Derrough was Co-Head of Jefferies & Company’s Recapitalization and Restructuring Group where he focused on recapitalizations, restructurings, financing and corporate advisory and led over 50 transactions representing more than $60 billion in transaction value. During his tenure, he was also co-head of Jefferies’ New York Office.
Prior to joining Jefferies, Mr. Derrough was a principal with the San Francisco-based private investment firm of Doyle & Boissiere, where he was responsible for identifying and executing control equity investments in underperforming companies and assisting them in their operational turnarounds.
Mr. Derrough began his career at Salomon Brothers as an investment banking analyst in 1989. From 1991 to 1997, he worked at Chanin & Company on a number of corporate restructurings and financings, most recently as Senior Vice President.
Mr. Derrough is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the International Insolvency Institute, a Trustee of Bennington College, a Director of Youth, Inc., a Director of the Boy Scouts of America of Greater New York, and a Trustee of the Academy of St. Joseph.
From 2014 to 2017, he served as a Regional Panelist for the White House Fellows Program. Mr. Derrough served as Treasurer of the Democratic National Committee from 2017 to 2021.
Mr. Derrough is a frequent speaker at various conferences and industry associations sponsored by numerous organizations including the American Bankruptcy Institute, Turnaround Management Association, National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges as well as various bar and industry associations. He has been a member of the faculty for various Federal Judicial Center’s educational programs for more than 20 years.
In addition, Mr. Derrough often participates as a guest lecturer at law schools and business schools across the country, including Harvard Business School, NYU Business School, NYU Law School, Columbia Business School, University of Texas Business School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Lambda Legal and the National Pastoral Life Center.
Mr. Derrough has provided expert testimony in a number of federal courts (including the Southern District of New York, the District of Delaware, the Southern District of Georgia, and the Southern District of Florida) and has been qualified as an expert in the areas of valuation, capital markets, M&A and financing in a number of jurisdictions.
As a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Mr. Derrough received his degree in Soviet Studies.
