James has over 25 years of experience advising real estate clients as a trusted advisor. He specializes in tax and business structuring, investment, financing, due diligence, and exit strategies. As a Real Estate Tax Partner at Aprio, he simplifies complex tax and business matters, helping clients achieve optimal outcomes through his financial and legal background.

A frequent speaker at national real estate and tax conferences, James has also served as an adjunct professor at top universities and as an Attorney Advisor for the U.S. Tax Court. He works closely with funds, REITs, DSTs, and multi-generational real estate family offices, offering proactive, innovative solutions.

Previously, James led the national real estate practice at a top 20 accounting firm, where he helped triple its revenue. A recognized thought leader, he has written extensively for tax publications, with his work cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and multiple federal courts.

James earned his B.S. in Accounting and J.D. from the University of South Dakota and his LL.M. in Taxation from NYU School of Law. He was also the first-ever recipient of the Real Estate CPA of the Year award from the Minnesota Real Estate Journal, recognizing his leadership and contributions to the real estate community.
