Darrel McMaster
CEO at Sustainable Homes Inc.
Speaker

Profile

Mr. McMaster has 50 years of building experience coming from a family that has been in the industry for over 80 years. A master builder with the hands-on experience and expertise to lead Sustainable Homes to build net zero carbon homes that generate all of the utility needs for the homes from the environment (including powering the owner’s electric cars).

It is the disruptive technology and an industry altering business model that allows Sustainable Homes to be able to include all of the sustainable features at an increase in cost of 8-10% above the cost of standard custom homes. With a 4.5-5-year ROI these homes have been called the $reenest in the country.

These homes feature rainwater harvesting for all domestic needs of the home. All wastewater is treated and reclaimed onsite and reused in the landscaping. Geothermal HVAC is used for heating and cooling, with a Desuperheater that generates hot water 7-9 months out of the year (with hot water being our second largest energy user). The power comes from a grid-tied solar array with battery backup and bi-directional chargers to achieve annually net-zero energy purchased.

Sustainable Homes also built the largest rainwater collection system at its time in Texas at the 200,000 sq. ft San Antonio Food Bank. It is the first-hand knowledge of interior water reduction and usage that allowed Mr. McMaster to be on numerous local, state and national water development and code creation committees. A guest speaker at most major Texas universities, builder associations, national irrigators conferences, trade shows and water conferences throughout the southwest states.
