John McDermott is The Economist‘s Chief Africa Correspondent, based in South Africa, but reporting across the continent. He is the winner of several journalism awards including the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) award for international reporting.
Before joining The Economist in 2016, he was a journalist with the Financial Times, which he joined in 2010. In a former life Mr.McDermott was a policy adviser in the prime minister’s strategy and policy units from 2008-10. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Harvard University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
