Maya Burney is a Senior Investment Officer at Calvert Impact, a US-based investment firm that provides debt and debt-like capital to lenders, fund managers and other intermediaries around the world that are a critical part of the infrastructure necessary to build localized market solutions. Maya’s responsibilities include a mix of deal sourcing and underwriting with a focus on international markets, strategic execution, and partnership building within Calvert’s flagship Community Investment Note portfolio.
Before joining Calvert, Maya worked at Caleo Capital, an investment and financial services group based in Johannesburg as an Associate Partner and previously Dealmaker within the private equity team. She has structured, raised, and deployed capital using equity, debt and hybrid instruments in emerging and developed markets, and has partnered with HNWIs and family offices to align their portfolios with their personal ethos. In 2021, Maya founded a network and alternative investment vehicle called Womvest serving women-led micro-and-medium-sized businesses in South Africa.
Maya holds an M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management from Georgetown McDonough School of Business and a BCom Honors in Finance from the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business. She also completed the Oxford Saïd Business School Impact Finance Innovations Program and is an alumna of the AVPA-AVPN Africa-Asia Impact Investing Fellowship. Maya is an American-Canadian citizen that has lived and worked in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Canada, and the USA.
