Profile
Mr. Yun is the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, Fibonacci Asset Management Global Pte. Ltd. His duties in the Company include overall management and supervision of the business, portfolio management, Investment research and analysis, trade execution, and business development.
Mr. Yun was educated in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he majored in Economics. In 2009, he returned to Korea to serve mandatory military service. Between 2010 and 2011, he served as a combat interpreter for US-Korea joint operations in Afghanistan, where he won a non-article 5 NATO medal from ISAF, NATO. He completed his military service in May 2011 and graduated from the University of Michigan to seek a career in the financial market.
During 2011 and 2012 he was placed in Fixed Income Primer Brokerage team, Deutsche Bank in London, United Kingdom. The job experience was a part of 12 months internship program sponsored by Mountbatten Institute, where he acted as a client service analyst to global hedge funds trading credit default swaps and interest rate swaps. He later joined Samsung Securities shortly after working at Morgan Stanley’s Seoul Branch.
At Samsung Securities, he managed the firm’s proprietary capital in both fixed income and equity market. He later acted as a key manager to hedge fund portfolios where he used hedging tactics to counter portfolio risks by actively tracking the alpha and beta composition of portfolios.
Before COVID-19, he oversaw management of fixed income portfolio of over USD 2 billion. Expecting the fall of key benchmark rate and rising spread between high yield bonds (HY) and investment grade bonds (IG), he actively rebalanced portfolios by reducing long term HY credits and increasing short term IGs. This resulted in healthy portfolio earnings, beating the previous year’s record. During the COVID- 19 pandemic of 2020 when he was managing hedge fund portfolios with high exposure to equity, his portfolio returned healthy profit by beating management’s goal and staged the return of more than USD 200 million.
Later, he founded Fibonacci Korea, a Seoul-based asset management company. He recruited past colleagues from Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, and Samsung Securities. As the company was new, it struggled to raise capital initially. However, Mr. Yun used his network in the financial market and actively presented his trading tactics to potential investors. As a result, the firm raised over USD 50 million within six months from institutional clients. The portfolio’s initial return was low as the firm took a defensive position in the market. The turbulence in the financial market in 2022, however, helped Fibonacci Korea to stand out among rivaling asset managers.
After initial success as a Korean hedge fund manager, Mr. Yun pushed for global expansion of Fibonacci as he obtained Fund Management Company License from Monetary Authority of Singapore. He is currently the Head of Investment for five actively managed hedge funds in Singapore as well as act as global strategy advisor for Fibonacci Group.
Mr. Yun believes that while prudence is key to stability, courage is the most important characteristic of all successful people. He has experienced some of the most extraordinary risk events (both in life and business) and understands the importance of risk management. He also believes that one’s value can be raised by adding value to society.
