Alan Mak MP is a Member of the UK Parliament, and a former UK Government Minister and member of the UK Shadow Cabinet. He has served as the MP for the Havant Constituency in Hampshire on the south coast of England since May 2015. With his party (the Conservatives) now in Opposition, he has served on the Front Bench as Shadow Treasury Minister and as Shadow Cabinet Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology. Prior to the 2024 General Election, Alan served as a Government Minister in multiple departments, including the Treasury, the Department for Business & Trade (DBT), the Cabinet Office and the Government Whips’ Office. His responsibilities covered economic growth, investment, productivity, technology and economic/investment security including responsibility for investment screening under the UK National Investment and Security Act 2021 as Minister for Economic Security. Alan was the Founding Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) where he led the campaign in Parliament for Britain to adopt new technologies such as AI, working in partnership with the World Economic Forum. He organised and led Parliament’s first ever debate on the 4IR, proposed the law which banned the use of new fax machines and pagers in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), and proposed the creation of the NHS patient app. Before public service, Alan had a successful business and professional career, having worked on private equity and M&A transactions in the City of London, started his own small business, and helped manage his family's small business. He carried the London 2012 Olympic Torch. Alan read Law at Peterhouse, Cambridge University and was born and grew up in York, England. He has a long-standing association with Harvard and delivered a series of lectures and seminars around the theme “The geopolitics of private capital and technology” at the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School in autumn 2025
