Ernst Wagner obtained his PhD in chemistry in 1985 from TU Vienna, Austria. He is full professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich since 2001, and current Director of Department of Pharmacy. He has authored >435 publications, is Editor-in Chief of The Journal of Gene Medicine, Editor of Pharmaceutical Research, board member of the German Society for Gene Therapy, and Committee member of the American Society for Gene & Cell Therapy. He was guest professor at Fudan U, Sichuan U, Utrecht U, is elected member of the Controlled Release Society College of Fellows, and since 2017 Academician of the European Academy of Sciences. In 2018 he received the honorary professorship of Sichuan U. In the 1990ies he designed synthetic virus-like gene transfer systems, including adenovirus-enhanced transferrinfection (AVET), which was applied for the first-in-world polymer-based clinical gene therapy study in 1994.
