Turkey’s Koyuncu Group invests in greenhouse with geothermal heating

Turkish company Koyuncu has invested in a 100,000 sq m greenhouse for tomato production that uses geothermal heating.
The first harvests were planned for early 2022. “Our annual production target is 6 million kg of tomatoes. It will be a production facility where we will obtain natural products by providing the most appropriate climate for plants with fully biological control and 100% automation systems where bumblebees are fertilized,” said Koyuncu’s Merve Turgut.
The company said it chose the Sandikli district in Afyonkarahisar Province, which is in the Aegean region of Turkey, because of the geothermal resources and high light levels. Production will be exported to European and Middle Eastern markets.
Unlike most commercial greenhouses in Europe, Turkish growers tend to use geothermal sources to heat greenhouses.
